An alternative way of discovering a Starlink user’s UID and GID is to run this short Perl

program on any of the Starlink systems:

#!/usr/bin/perl

# Returns users' uid and gid numbers

# Liam, June 1999

($name,$passwd,$uid,$gid,$quota,$comment,$gcos,$dir,$shell) = getpwnam($ARGV[0]);

print "User $ARGV[0] ($comment):\n";

print "uid = $uid\n";

print "gid = $gid\n";

Save this as an executable called getuid and run with a username as an argument:

> getuid ljg

User ljg (Liam Gretton):

uid = 317

gid = 333

User login process

All users have tcsh as their login shell. When a user logs in, the contents of the following files

are executed in order:

• /etc/csh.cshrc

• /etc/csh.login

• ~/.cshrc

• ~/.login

Therefore, common environment variables and setup scripts are generally initialised in

/etc/csh.cshrc (the login files I haven’t altered from the standard install).
